Berlin during the 20’s

Berlin in the 20s was considered pivotal in the emerging artistic scene.

In the year of 1920, Berlin and its surrounding municipalities became a metropolis of 4 million people. In contrast to Paris, Rome and Vienna, the city was arriviste and cocky. Berlin was an untraditional city, constantly re-inventing itself.

It was only a few years away from being at the forefront of some of the most important cultural developments of the age. Newspapers, and the new media of radio and film, experienced a rapid growth. As the city developed, night turned to day.

Dance clubs, strip bars, brothels, vaudeville and cabaret boomed. The physical act of love between people of the same gender, and everybody else, was indulged, as were drugs of all kinds.

Experimentation was cool and anything that pleased the senses was permitted.
